Temple of Doom with Rohan Harrying Force – August 21, 2021

Overview

I’ll preface this that I had played this quest 3 player during LCG Con 2021 and knew it was hard. I wanted to see if Rohan Discard with the A Long Extended Party cards could handle such a hard quest. I was certainly impressed with my ability to quest. I saw Memory of the Dark Years which made it harder to quest, but I was able to make some progress pretty much every turn. The discard engine worked well to get some allies out reliably. This all in all was an enjoyable game.

Postmortem

I thought it unlikely to see a third copy of Ulchor’s Rage so soon. Looking it up, there’s 4 copies of that card in the encounter deck. I guess should have been more cautious and had Thengel defend. He’d be almost dead, but then Hama’s 2 attack would have been in play for player attacks. I had enough attack anyway to kill the guard. My top card was a Hama which I was counting on putting a new copy into play with Need Brooks No Delay. Overall pretty happy with the deck. It was doing everything I wanted it to do. I was questing quite well. I had enough attack power to kill the Ulchor’s guards I engaged. Hama was handling defense and Thengel was ready to defend until Sword of Rhun attached to Khamul. Hopefully next game, I don’t see that particular encounter card combo again. Worthy of Remembrance might get side boarded out. I don’t expect to avoid many engagements.

If this deck doesn’t work out, I suspect a Dwarf deck with Spirit Dain would be a good idea. The locations have the Underground trait so Ever My Heart Rises would be effective. Dain could defend easily right away and any defensive boosts would help against the Easterling attachments.
