Introduction

There is on caveat to this attempt. I didn’t realize until turn 11 that I was supposed to randomly select an ally. The game might have gone a bit differently if I had done so earlier. Turn 11 I rolled a d8 to select the unlucky ally. Before that I just picked.

Turn 1: Foe-hammer drawn. Rivendell Blade played on Legolas. Derndingle Warrior played too. Eowyn quests for 4. Choose to add Storehouse to the staging area for Lost in the City. 2 progress made on the 4th Star. Refresh and increase threat to 26.

Turn 2: Gandalf drawn. Vassal of the Windlord and Honour Guard played. Eowyn and Derndingle Warrior quest for 5. False Lead ends questing. Refresh and increase threat to 27.

Turn 3: Bofur drawn and played. Bofur, Eowyn, and Derndingle Warrior quest for 6. City Street added to staging area and surges into Underworld Dissident for total threat of 7. Threat raised to 28 for unsuccessfully questing. Dissident engaged and Beregond defends taking no damage as shadow card has no effect. Legolas attacks and kills the dissident placing 2 progress on the 4th Star. Play Foe-hammer exhausting Rivendell Blade to draw 3 cards. Draw 2 Eagles of the Misty Mountains and Arod. Refresh and increase threat to 29.

Turn 4: Gondorian Shield drawn and played on Beregond. Arod played on Legolas. Eowyn, Bofur, and Derndingle Warrior quest for 6. Underworld Dissident added to the staging area resulting 7 threat. Threat raised to 30 for questing unsuccessfully. Dissident engaged and his attack defended by Beregond. No shadow effect and Beregond takes no damage. Legolas attacks and kills the dissident placing a progress on the 4th Star to explore it and 1 resource placed on stage 1B. Lossarnach Bandit added to the staging area from under the 4th Star. Arod exhausted to place a progress on Storehouse. Rivendell Blade exhausted for Foe-hammer and draw 3 cards. Derndingle Warrior, Gandalf, and Blade of Gondolin drawn. Refresh and increase threat to 31.

Turn 5: Dagger of Westernesse drawn and played on Legolas. Blade of Gondolin played on Beregond. Eagles of the Misty Mountains played. Eowyn, Bofur, Derndingle Warrior, and Eagles of the Misty Mountains quest for 9. Honour Guard discarded to A Knife in the Back treachery but no damage dealt to a hero. 2 progress places on the quest but it doesn’t matter. Travel to City Street. Lossarnach Bandit engaged but don’t have any resources to discard. Beregond defends and no shadow effect so no damage to Beregond. Legolas attacks and kills the bandit placing 2 progress on City Street exploring it which adds a resource to the quest. Exhaust Arod to put a progress on Storehouse exploring it and adding another resource to the quest for a total of 3. Zealous Traitor added to the staging area from under Storehouse. Exhaust Dagger of Westernesse and play Foe-hammer to draw 3 cards. 2 Favor of the Valar and Knights of the Swan drawn. Refresh and increase threat to 32. (That was an awesome turn.)

Turn 6: Feint drawn. Derndingle Warrior played. Eowyn and Eagles of the Misty Mountains quest for 6. Sewers added to the staging area so questing is successful. Travel to the Sewers. Zealous Traitor optionally engaged dealing a damage to all allies which kills Vassal of the Windlord. Vassal of the Windlord added under Eagles of the Misty Mountains. Beregond defends and shadow raises traitor’s attack to 4 dealing no damage. Legolas attacks and kills the traitor adding 3 progress to the Sewers after exhausting #Arod. Sewers explored adding the last resource to the quest and Secret Map objective revealed from under the Sewers. Stage 1B is completed revealing the Up in Flames plot (now not so happy about all the cards drawn by Foe-hammer) and adds Roots of Mindolliun as the active location. Refresh and increase threat to 33. Up in Flames gets a resource token and discards Vassal of the Windlord from the top of my deck.

Turn 7: Honour Guard drawn and played. Knights of the Swan played too. Eowyn, Bofur, 2 Derndingle Warrior, and Eagles of the Misty Mountains quest for 10. Sewers added to the staging area putting an Underworld card under Roots of Mindolliun. Questing results in Roots being fully explored and 1 resource token on the quest. Roots adds Umbar Assassin and Zealous Traitor to the staging area. Travel to Sewers. Optionally engage Zealous Traitor dealing 1 damage to all allies and exhaust Honour Guard to save Knights of the Swan. Eowyn soaks 2 archery damage from Umbar Assassin. Knights of the Swan defends the traitor’s attack and shadow removes the resource token from the quest as Knights of the Swan die. Legolas kills the traitor and with Arod explores the Sewers. Pickpocket added to the staging area from under the Sewers. Exhaust Beregond to claim the Secret Map objective. Up in Flames discards Beechbone and Knights of the Swan from top of my deck. Refresh and increase threat to 34.

Turn 8: Honour Guard drawn and played. Eowyn, Bofur, and 2 Derndingle Warrior quest for 8. City Street added which surges into Underworld Dissident. Questing unsuccessful resulting in threat increasing to 38. Travel to City Street. Umbar Assassin Optionally engaged and 2 of 3 damage to Legolas prevented by Honour Guards. Pickpocket and dissident engage on their own. Undamaged Honour Guard soaks 2 archery damage. Beregond defends against the assassin. No shadow effect and no damage dealt. Play Feint on pickpocket. Dissident atrack undefended dealing 2 damage to Beregond as shadow card has no effect. Legolas kills the assassin exploring the City Streets and putting a 2nd resource token on the quest. Eagles of the Misty Mountains kill the pickpocket. Up in Flames discards Favor of the Valar, Rivendell Blade, and Sterner than Steel. Refresh and increase threat to 39.

Turn 9: Dagger of Westernesse drawn. Eagles of the Misty Mountains number 2 played. Eowyn, Bofur, and 2 Derndingle Warrior quest for 8. Market Square added to the Staging area. Can’t travel to it. Dissident attacks and Beregond defends. No shadow effect and no damage dealt. Up in Flames discards 4 cards from top of my deck (16 cards left.) Refresh and increase threat to 40.

Turn 10: Defender of Rammas drawn and no cards played. Same questers as last turn for 8. Beregond gains Local Trouble. Spend a resource to travel to Market Square. Eagles of the Misty Mountains defends against Underworld Dissident. Shadow has no effect because attack is defended. Refresh and increase threat to 41. Up in Flames mills 5 (10 cards left).

Turn 10: Derndingle Warrior drawn and played. Same questers as last turn for 8. Discard a Derndingle Warrior to A Knife in the Back preventing the damage to a hero with Honour Guard. Questing now for 7 which well exceeds the 1 progress needed for Market Square. 3rd resource placed on the quest. Eagles of the Misty Mountains defends the dissident’s attack and shadow removes all resources but now damage. Up in Flames mills 6 (3 cards left), refresh, and increase threat to 42.

Turn 11: Sterner than Steel drawn. Same questers for 8 and if encounter card is not a location that’s the game. City Street added to the staging area and surges into A Knife in the Back. The damaged Derndingle Warrior is discarded and damage prevented with Honour Guard. Travel to City Streets. Damaged Eagles of the Misty Mountains defends dissident’s attack and takes no damage as there is no shadow effect. Legolas attacks and kills the dissident exploring the City Streets and placing last resource on the quest. Stage 3A adds the villain to the staging area but does not remove the plot. Lose to Up in Flames at the end of the turn.

Intruders in Chetwood with Angmar Awakened Campaign Minimum Purchase Deck 1 – June 26, 2022

Introduction

I built a deck using just the cards available in the revised core set and Angmar Awakened cycle. This is deck testing in anticipation of the new campaign coming out in August. This is why I’m not using Amarthuil despite trying to lean towards Dunedain. Although not many of the Dunedain allies made it into the deck besides Northern Tracker and Guardian of Arnor. Much of the deck space had to go to more utility cards like A Test of Will, Steward of Gondor, Miner of the Iron Hills, Daughter of Nimrodel, etc. The sideboard is extensive because there are many cards I’m considering if this version doesn’t work. Also, I expect that even if I can get a good core there will need tweaks for some of the quests. Anyway that is what I’m hoping the testing will help me figure out.

That is game due to threat.

Postmortem

I guess I should have put Faramir into play to ensure I could quest but then Orc War Party wouldn’t have been dealt with and I’d risk losing Aragorn again. Early on I felt like I was in a good position. The main mistake was not keeping a Spirit resource that round I quested again Orc Rearguard and had to reveal 4 encounter cards. I don’t like having to rely on chump blocking or Protector of Lorien for defense. Not there are a lot of good defense options between the Revised Core and Angmar Awakened cards. Pretty much Lore Denthor and Amarthuil for 3 defense, Amarthuil can only be used for Battle of Carn Dum and The Dread Realm. I’ll play the deck as is at least one more time to see if the issue was just that one really bad play or if the weak defense is going to be an ongoing issue.

Dissident engages. Beregond defends the bandit’s attack, no shadow effect, and takes no damage. Booming Ent defends the dissident’s attack. Shadow adds one to the attack for a total of 4 dealing 2 damage to Booming Ent. Aragorn and Knights of the Swan attack and kill the bandit. Refresh and increase threat to 32.

Turn 3: Dagger of Westernesse drawn. Horn of Gondor played on Eowyn. Dagger of Westernesse number 2 played on Aragorn. Eowyn quests for 4. Houses of the dead added to the staging resulting in no progress or threat gain. Defender of Rammas defends the dissident’s attack and shadow card returns it to the staging area. Refresh and increase threat to 33.

Turn 4: Knights of the Swan drawn. Knights of the Swan number 2 played. Eowyn and Aragorn quest for 6. City Streets added to the staging area and Local Trouble added to Aragorn. Threat raised to 36 for questing unsuccessfully. Dissident engaged and Beregond defends. Beregond takes no damage as there is no shadow effect. Both Knights of the Swan attack and kill the dissident. Refresh and increase threat to 38 thanks to Local Trouble.

Turn 5: Defender of Rammas drawn. Gandalf played and draws 3 cards. Derndingle Warrior, Defender of Rammas, and Gondorian Spearman drawn. Aragorn, Eowyn, and Gandalf quest for 10 which results in threat increasing to 39. City Streets revealed and surges revealing Underwold Dissident. I scoop to location lock.

The Banks are Explored and 4 progress placed on the quest. Travel to The Citadel and Orc Rabble engages. Play Feint on Orc Rabble discarding its shadow card. Aragorn and Eowyn attack killing it. Refresh and increase threat to 30.

Turn 3: Honour Guard drawn and Legolas played. Both Winged Guardians quest for 8. Orc Scrambles added to the staging area and deal 1 damage to the battlegrounds. Surge reveals Scourge of Mordor which discards Knights of the Swan from the top of my deck. Staging area threat is 4 and 4 progress placed on The Citadel. Orc Scramblers engaged and Beregond defends. No shadow effect and no damage on Beregond. Legolas attacks and kills the Scramblers. Defender of Rammas drawn. Refresh and increase threat to 31.

Turn 4: Dagger of Westernesse drawn. Defender of Rammas and Vassal of the Windlord played. Defender of Rammas and both Winged Guardians quest for 12. Orc War Camp added during staging resulting in 7 threat. 5 progress placed on The Citadel for a total of 9. Refresh and increase threat to 32.

Turn 5: 2nd Honour Guard drawn. Defender of Rammas number 2 played. Dagger of Westernesse attached to Aragorn. Defenders and Winged Guardians quest for 16. Lieutenant of Mordor added to the staging area which activates Southron Supports when revealed effect in the encounter discard pile. This adds Southron Mercenaries to the staging area for 11 threat total. The Citadel is explored and added to the Victory display and 3 progress placed on the quest for a total of 7. Travel to The Approach. Lieutenant of Mordor engaged. Mercenaries archery damage of 1 dealt to Aragorn. Beregond defends and takes a damage as a shadow card increases lieutenant’s attack to 7. Aragorn and Legolas attack and kill the lieutenant. Feint drawn. Refresh and increase threat to 33.

Turn 6: Knights of the Swan drawn and played. Honour Guard played. 2 Defender of Rammas and 2 Winged Guardian quest for 16. Orc Arsonist added to the staging area for 10 total threat. 6 progress added to The Approach. Optionally engage the Arsonist and he gets a shadow card. Southron mercenaries archery damage negated by exhausting Honour GuardKnights of the Swan defend vs arsonist. Arsonist 2 shadow cards results in a total of 6 shadow cards being flipped. These add 1 attack and deal 2 damage to The Approach and give it another attack. Knights of the Swan die. Beregond defends the second attack. Shadow card does 2 more damage to The Approach for a total of 5. Aragorn and Legolas kill the Arsonist. Gandalf drawn. Refresh and increase threat to 34.

Turn 7: Legolas drawn. Honour Guard number 2 played. Same questers as last turn for 16. Revealed treachery would deal 3 damage to any character of a chosen sphere and choosing Spirit results in no damage. The Approach is explored and added to the victory display and 8 progress placed on the quest completing stage 1B. Stages 2-4 are removed thanks to exploring the battlegrounds. Stage 5B adds Orc Arbalesters to the staging area. Travel to Orc War Camp. Optionally engage Southron Mercenaries. Archery damage from mercenaries and Arbalesters negated by 2 Honour Guards. Beregond defends and shadow adds 2 attack for a total of 5 but enough to damage Beregond. Aragorn attacks and kills the mercenaries. Aragorn’s ability engages the Arbalesters. Legolas and Vassal of the Windlord attack and kill the Arbalesters. Dwarven Axe drawn. Refresh and increase threat to 35.

Turn 8: The Eagles Are Coming! drawn and played. Only eagle card is another The Eagles Are Coming!. Shuffle and play it. No eagles on 2nd try. Play Dwarven Axe and Dagger of Westernesse on Eowyn. Aragorn, Eowyn, Beregond, Legolas, and 2 Defender of Rammas quest for 14. The Power of Mordor can’t shuffle any cards back into the encounter deck but does raise threat to 38. A. The Fortress of Nurn 6 – June 12, 2022

Introduction

I made sure this time to set up the game correctly putting 8 cards under the main quest as well as the Storm the Castle side quests. I made another minor tweak subbing The Storm Comes in for A Good Harvest. Hopefully that gives me a player side quest to start, but a lot less likely now with my 6 starting cards and only 4 in my deck to look through with Thurindir.

Post Mortem

That was a fun game! It was so close throughout most of the game. I got really lucky finding Keep Watch in the cards I searched for completing The Dungeons of Dol Rhugar. That helped with the Olag-hai and made it very safe keeping Guard Dogs engaged to power up my Dunedain. I realized on my last turn I forgot to deal 2 damage for the last 2 Guard Dogs when they engaged. I think I could have managed taking the damage on a couple heroes if nothing else. At least I did take out all 40 cards for setup this time so I won’t have a huge asterisk on this win. This game also was one of the few times I’ve gotten Warden of Annuminas to be a really good quester. This quest is likely my favorite of the cycle. I really enjoy side quests and getting to leverage the Dunedain side quest bonus cards. That is something I’ll miss when replaying Angmar Awakened with the new campaign. I played through it the first time alternating between side quest bonus and Forth the Three Hunters decks.

I said a while back that once I finished this, I would do some deck testing for the Angmar Awakened campaign. My plan is to play through the campaign with a Dunedain deck and mostly keep the same hero line up. I know I’ll definitely put in Amarthuil at Battle of Carn Dum. Aragorn I’ll probably swap between his Leadership and Tactics versions if there’s a need. Also, I plan to only use cards available in the Revised Core Set and the Angmar Awakened cycle. We’ll see how difficult that is. I’ll probably skip around for deck testing so I don’t burn out on playing the quests before the campaign is available in August.

The Fortress of Nurn 5 – June 4, 2022

Introduction

I tweaked the hero line up again. I put in Tactics Eowyn and Spirit Beregond replacing Spirit Glorfindel and Tactics Aragorn. I think this will make the deck function without Keep Watch and Celebrian’s Stone. RedSpiderr’s original decklist included Aragorn and Thorongil to eventually get his Lore version in for threat reduction. Threat might be an issue later in this quest, but I’ve been having trouble getting more than a few turns in. I think this change will help get to those later turns and then see if the deck can handle whatever else it can throw at me.

Post Mortem

I concede there because Beregond will die defending Thane Ulchor’s attack. I got a Castle side quest completed. I considered questing against the main quest or the Storm the Castle with Kabul. Eowyn could have killed Kabul but I would have risked losing Beregond. The main quest probably would have been better and hope to find healing next turn. The quest this time did more direct damage than I remember seeing the last couple of times. I’ll have to look back to confirm that impression. It could just be that I had some healing from The Long defeat help out. Lethal Counterattack might be one I hope to see first before I get Wardens of Healing otherwise they’d be toast. I’m tempted to add Honour Guards just to double up on ways to deal with the direct damage. Beregond definitely helped make defense much more manageable without Keep Watch. The deck still wants a player side quest early. The Storm Comes is probably worth subbing in just to increase the odds of having one and smoothing resources for the Dunedain allies.

Introduction

I haven’t attempted Fortress of Nurn yet again. I’m going to have to step it up if I’m going to play Angmar Awakened when the campaign box comes out in July. I promise another attempt is coming. Until then here’s a couple more older playthroughs.

Turn 2: Winged Guardian drawn. Play Bofur. Eowyn, Bofur, and Celador quest for 6. Ithilien Guardian added to the staging area and quest for 8. Morgul Spider revealed from surge coming into play with 6 attack for the round and 6 threat in the staging area. 1 progress placed on Ithilien Road. Spider engaged and Beregond defends. Shadow card adds one attack for 7 total killing Beregond. Aragorn attacks and kills the spider. Refresh and threat is 33.

Turn 3: Feint drawn. No cards played during planning. Quest for 7 with Celador, Ithilien Guardian, Bofur, and Eowyn. Secluded Glade added to the staging area for 6 total threat. Use Eowyn’s ability to raise questing to 16. This clears the active location and places 7 progress on the quest. Travel to a Secluded glade and refresh. Threat is 34.

Turn 4: Bofur drawn. Play Winged Guardian. Everyon but Winged Guardian quests for 12. Treachery deals 1 damage to each questing character and surges. Secluded Glade added to the staging area. Active location cleared and 3 progress placed on the quest. Refresh and threat is 35.

Turn 5: Sterner than Steel drawn. Play Eagles of the Misty Mountains. Everyone but Aragorn and Winged Guardian quest for 9. Treachery raises threat to 38 and adds Southron Merecenaries to the staging area for total threat of 5. Active location cleared and 1 progress added to the quest. Travel to the last Secluded Glade. Merecenaries engage and deal 1 archery damage to Eagles of the Misty Mountains. Winged Guardians defend and shadow raises threat to 40. Winged Guardian discarded and added to Eagles of the Misty Mountains. Aragorn attacks and kills the mercenaries. Refresh and threat is 41.

Turn 6: Knights of the Swan drawn and played. Every character but Aragron quests for 11. Ithilien Road added to the staging area. Active location cleared, 4 progress placed on the quest, and stage 1B completed. Celador survived so skipped stage 2 and proceeded to stage 3A. Flipped to 3B gaining control of Celador and Ithilien Guardian. Travel to Ithilien Road. Refresh and threat increases to 42.

Turn 7: Defender of Rammas drawn and played. Quest with everyone but Knights of the Swan and Defender of Rammas for 14. Treachery deals 1 damage to questing characters killing Celador. Next treachery from surge raises threat to 47. Active location cleared and 8 progress placed on the quest. Refresh and threat is 48.

Turn 8: Eagles of the Misty Mountains drawn. I play Honour Guard. Quest for 12 with Aragron, Eowyn, Ithilien Guardian, and Eagles of the Misty Mountains. Treachery removes Aragron from the quest but 10 progress placed completing stage 3B. Then refresh but have to increase threat to 51 and threat out.

Southron Company added to the staging area. 6 progress placed on the quest. Engage Southron company engaged and feinted discarding Morgul Spider shadow card. Aragorn and Legolas kill the company and Knights of the Swan drawn. Refresh and threat is 38.

Turn 4: Favor of the Valar drawn. Winged Guardian played. Same questers as last turn for 9. Treachery has doomed 3 and adds a Harad enemy to the staging area. Southron Company added from the discard pile. Stage 1B completed and move onto Stage 3B. Refresh and threat is 39.

The Fortress of Nurn 4 – May 21, 2022

Introduction

I went and made RedSpiderr’s Dunedain deck into a Bond of Friendship deck adding Spirit Glorfindel to the line up. I think that will make early willpower and attack much better. Celebrian’s Stone now isn’t a must have for the opening hand. No additional help for Amarthuil defending early on. I just have to hope for Keep Watch or that I can have him survive long enough.

I will concede on that.

Post Mortem

Questing is a lot better. I also have some early combat ability if Light of Valinor is on Glorfindel. That doesn’t really fix the issue the original deck had that there are 2 key cards needed to get going. The big temptation is to make the deck even less thematic by replacing Aragorn with Tactics Eowyn and Spirit Glorfindel with Spirit Beregond. I can see those swaps helping tremendously in the early game. Spirit Beregond can also provide threat reduction that will help even if Covered in Darkness hits the board. I think the deck was doing pretty well. I could probably just put in another copy of Keep Watch to increase the likelihood of hitting it, or just try it again as is and hope to get lucky. I can also seeing it doing much worse if I don’t either Keep Watch or Light of Valinor. I’m also concerned about threat in the late game since Covered in Darkness, Under the Watchful Eye, and The Tower of Barad-Dur combo together.
