Fire in the Night with Side Quest: Reunification of the Numenorian Kingdoms – April 17, 2021

Overview

I read about how this quest is very side quest heavy and saw an opportunity to leverage all the Dunedain bonuses for having side quests completed. I needed some healing and a strong defender though. Enter Beregond and Last Alliance so that I have a strong defender right away and get resource acceleration for Warden of Healing or the more expensive Dunedain allies. The contract also let’s me draw cards for playing Warriors, Gondor, or Dunedain characters from Ingold’s ability. Lots of potential synergy as appropriate between Gondor and Dunedain with this contract.

I concede realizing I’ve been doing the blocking of Dagnir’s attacks on HH all wrong. Plus, I can’t seem to find Gondorian Shield which is really needed right now.

Postmortem

I completely misplayed the excess damage part. When I had Beregond defend, I subtracted his defense and then all damage went to Hrogar’s Hill. He should have had 3 damage on turn 2. That would have changed the calculation on traveling in turn 3 and a bunch of other things. I scooped at turn 8 after realizing this when I was trying to figure out if I could effectively chump black end of planning attack.

The Land of Sorrow – January 9, 2022

Overview

I read that this scenario had a lot of direct damage and threat raising. I thought I would take a modified version of Seastan’s Seventeen A Round Gloin deck against it. Let the scenario’s direct damage help me accelerate into a threat reducing combo with ally Nori recycling Galadhrim’s Greeting. I put in Galdor to try and get a faster start. I think that ended up being a mistake.

Postmortem

That will kill Gloin since he is only at +1 hit point right now. Even if I heal the 1 damage he has. Looks like I’ll need an Ent. Probably should go with the original Seventeen per Round list with Treebeard hero. Then I can run Ent Draught to make him safer sooner. Even then I think location lock will be an issue. There’s not much willpower to ramp up into. Probably should go with a faster Gloin deck where he only needs Lore to get the engine going. I also considered a location control deck with Elrond and a Dunedain for Ranger for Heirs of Earendil and/or Distant Stars. Then I could use Mithril Shirt and Stone of Elostirion.

Overview

I was really unsure how this game would go. My opening hand wasn’t impressive. Once again, I demonstrate a knack for drawing Hidden Caches and Ered Luin Miners instead of mining them. I think bad luck defeats me more than the quest itself does.

Postmortem

For all my horrible draws of cards I wanted to mine, somehow I pulled this game out. I was much more able to use Map and Dwarven Tomb to refill my deck a little bit more than previous games. I wasn’t excited about starting with 2 Elrond’s Counsel but they kept me from having to engage Ash Mountain Werewolf and milling an extra card for each of its attacks which was nice.

I can definitely see myself coming back to play this scenario again. This quest, Danger in Dorwinion, Temple of Doom, Wrath and Ruin, and Challenge of the Wainriders all seem to have good replay value. Challenge of the Wainriders maybe not as a true solo scenario though. Next up, Land of Sorrow!

Postmortem

I think I was close this time to winning. The deck has answers to what the quest throws at you but I seem to have terrible luck on draws. I also read in Electronjon’s piloting instructions that he usually clears the first side quest early. That definitely helped in my misplayed game where I cleared Overwhelming Darkness first turn. This game I did have a chance to clear A Haunt of Beasts but thought I could just ignore it. It also doesn’t help that I don’t have a 3rd copy of Unexpected Courage. When it is in play it is much easier to manage the enemies. I might have to play on Drgncards next time to play with the 3rd copy as intended.

I have to say I’m not getting tired or frustrated with the quest yet. This one reminds me so much of playing against a mill deck in Magic. It is fairly quick to play which is nice. Jon’s deck also isn’t as straightforward to play as I initially thought.

Postmortem

Oh I miscalculated. I will run of cards at the end of this round. I could try to go for Overwhelming Darkness but it wouldn’t buy me the 2 more rounds I need. Overwhelming Darkness really kills any tricks to add cards to my deck. Well that is another loss. I think I had the right player and encounter card draws in my last game to win, but my early play mistake of not engaging the patrol and aggressively questing last that game for me. This one I engaged it early but only got 1 Shipwright in play and just wasn’t getting the same level of quest power going. I also had much more staging area threat to deal with.

Under the Ash Mountains with Electronjon’s Ain’t No Ash Mountain High Enough – November 6, 2021

Overview

My first attempt at this quest. I long ago decided I wanted to try this deck when I got to Under the Ash Mountains. It sounded like fun and would make this difficult quest easier. I had seen a 3 player playthrough of it when it came out and they were destroyed by it. I probably should have read the play tips much more closely before attempting this.

Postmortem

After the first couple of turns, I felt pretty in control of the game. I almost always knew what was coming between Henamarth, Risk Some Light, and Scout Ahead. Getting that second Ithilien Lookout

I just realized that if I explore Fiery Chasm I’m mining 5 and then 5 more at the end of the round. I didn’t make it. I only have 9 cards in my deck. Engaging the patrol so that I can make more than 5 progress is much more important that I realized. I should have used a miner to chump block it long ago.

Postmortem

After the first couple of turns, I felt pretty in control of the game. I almost always knew what was coming between Henamarth, Risk Some Light, and Scout Ahead. Getting that second Ithilien Lookout to discard the second Goblin Sniper made a big difference in helping to get the Ranger Bows pinging away at the Hill Troll. Mid game felt a bit sluggish. I kept getting attachments that didn’t help advance the board state since I wasn’t hitting enemies at the time. I also seem to have been pretty lucky hitting several low threat cards in a row. I wonder quite a bit how this would do with Lore Pippin, MotK Bilbo, and Folco line up. Then could have all the Hobbit Pipes, The Shirefolk, and Gaffer Gamgee. The one Hobbit Pipe despite getting it out before any threat reduction didn’t help draw many cards. Pippin also couldn’t draw that many since it was not safe to engage enemies if I didn’t have to.

Challenge of the Wainriders with Rohan and Eagles Race the Wainriders – Attempt 2 – October 30, 2021

I set up for another attempt right after my quick loss. This time around the ally discard engine gets up and running. Westfold Horse-Breaker of all cards I would call the MVP of the game. When discarded, it could ready Thengel and Gwaihir as needed for combat or racing tests. Eventually, it was readying all my heroes when discarded and not just one. I just had to hope to not see an early Rider of Rhun or Overcrowded Track again.

Postmortem

Wow, this game took a long time to play! I started playing early in the afternoon. I had to stop for dinner and pick this game up later. I had completed 1 circuit before dinner. The second circuit took another hour and a half. Some of that is typing this log as I play. Some of that is working out when to discard an ally and who to use the contract on. I’m surprised I managed to beat this in 12 turns. It helped getting Unexpected Courage on Eowyn and the Winged Guardians out. Then I could expect to have a shot of passing 2 racing tests in a single turn. Really interesting set up, but the racing tests are retread of well worn mechanic in other quests. Exhaust character(s) and discard cards hoping for the right word or icon in the bottom corner that is in many quests. I was hoping this would be one of the Vengeance of Mordor quests I’d want to revisit since it seemed more unique. I don’t think I’ll try this again anytime soon given how long this game went.

I’m pretty happy with how my deck did. There was a lot to think about when to use the contract and on which card to maximize the ally discard effects. The location control was all for Crowded Track which didn’t come up. Still very helpful to avoid a little bit of threat gain and needing extra success for a racing test (Ravine Ledge).

Peril in Pelargir with Mono-Tactics – Attempt 1 – April 11, 2019

Overview

This is first game where I wrote down everything I did during the game. It’s more free form than my current format with all the phases and action windows specified. This is when I decided to try playing regularly to at least beat every quest once. My plan back then was to build one deck and play that deck for the cycle and tweak as I went. I did not have a full card pool, but I used whatever I had available at the time. I wanted to build a deck that used cards I liked and worked rather than confine myself to any sort of progression. I started with Mono-Tactics since Tactics Eowyn was new to me at the time. I found the idea of a Tactics deck that could quest exciting. Plus, I remembered hearing about Battle and Seige questing for this cycle.

Play by Play

Turn 1: Played Bofur and Gondorian Shield on Beregond. I didn’t send anyone to quest. Discarded 2 locations from a collateral damage raised threat from 28 to 32. Harbor Thug engages because of the threat raise. No progress made but no threat increase from questing. Beregrond defends against Harbor Thug no problem. Aragorn kills Harbor Thug. Use Bofur ability and get a Dagger of Westernesse.

Turn 2: I drew another Dagger of Westernesse. I played one on Aragon. Then sent Bofur and Eowyn to the quest for 3. Lossarnach Bandit is revealed for no progress and once engaged removes resource I was saving for Eagles of the Misty Mountains. Beregond defends easily. Aragorn attacks nearly killing the bandit.

Turn 3: I draw Grimbold and play a Defender of Rammas. Eowyn and Bofur quest again. Pickpocket revealed and no progress made. Pickpocket engaged. Beregond defends vs the bandit but shadow is lose an attachment. [Gondorian Shield] (/card/06005) discarded since I have another in hand. Defender of Rammas defends vs the pickpocket. Eagles of the Misty Mountains discarded and 1 resource to the pickpocket forced effect. Aragorn kills pickpocket.

Turn 4: I draw Sterner than Steel and play Grimbold and Gondorian Shield. Eowyn, Bofur, and Grimbold quest for 4. City Street surges into Zealous Traitor. No progress but no threat. Traitor engages killing Defender of Rammas. Aragorn takes bandit’s attack undefended for 3 and Alcaron’s Scroll attaches. Beregond defends vs traitor for no damage. Aragorn kills traitor.
