Overview

I was really unsure how this game would go. My opening hand wasn’t impressive. Once again, I demonstrate a knack for drawing Hidden Caches and Ered Luin Miners instead of mining them. I think bad luck is the bigger hinderance than the quest itself.

Postmortem

For all my horrible draws of cards I wanted to mine, somehow I pulled this game out. I was much more able to use Map and Dwarven Tomb to refill my deck a little bit more than previous games. I wasn’t excited about starting with 2 Elrond’s Counsel but they kept me from having to engage Ash Mountain Werewolf and milling an extra card for each of its attacks which was nice.

I can definitely see myself coming back to play this scenario again. This quest, Danger in Dorwinion, Temple of Doom, Wrath and Ruin, and Challenge of the Wainriders all seem to have good replay value. Challenge of the Wainriders maybe not as a true solo scenario though. Next up, Land of Sorrow!

Postmortem

I think I was close this time to winning. The deck has answers to what the quest throws at you but I seem to have terrible luck on draws. I also read in Electronjon’s piloting instructions that he usually clears the first side quest early. That definitely helped in my misplayed game where I cleared Overwhelming Darkness first turn. This game I did have a chance to clear A Haunt of Beasts but thought I could just ignore it. It also doesn’t help that I don’t have a 3rd copy of Unexpected Courage. When it is in play it is much easier to manage the enemies. I might have to play on Drgncards next time to play with the 3rd copy as intended.

I have to say I’m not getting tired or frustrated with the quest yet. This one reminds me so much of playing against a mill deck in Magic. It is fairly quick to play which is nice. Jon’s deck also isn’t as straightforward to play as I initially thought.

Postmortem

Oh I miscalculated. I will run of cards at the end of this round. I could try to go for Overwhelming Darkness but it wouldn’t buy me the 2 more rounds I need. Overwhelming Darkness really kills any tricks to add cards to my deck. Well that is another loss. I think I had the right player and encounter card draws in my last game to win, but my early play mistake of not engaging the patrol and aggressively questing last that game for me. This one I engaged it early but only got 1 Shipwright in play and just wasn’t getting the same level of quest power going. I also had much more staging area threat to deal with.

Overview

My first attempt at this quest. I long ago decided I wanted to try this deck when I got to Under the Ash Mountains. It sounded like fun and would make this difficult quest easier. I had seen a 3 player playthrough of it when it came out and they were destroyed by it. I probably should have read the play tips much more closely before attempting this.

Postmortem

After the first couple of turns, I felt pretty in control of the game. I almost always knew what was coming between Henamarth, Risk Some Light, and Scout Ahead. Getting that second Ithilien Lookout

I just realized that if I explore Fiery Chasm I’m mining 5 and then 5 more at the end of the round. I didn’t make it. I only have 9 cards in my deck. Engaging the patrol so that I can make more than 5 progress is much more important that I realized. I should have used a miner to chump block it long ago.
