The Dunland Trap with Minimum Purchase Rohan Deck 5 – January 12, 2020

Introduction

I made some minor changes to the deck. I took out Celebrian’s Stone, a Hasty Stroke, and Horn of Gondor to make room for 3 copies of Power of Orthanc. I really think it’s necessary because of In Need of Rest.

Turn 1: Feint drawn. (Just now realized that I’ve been playing the forced effect wrong. He has to be engaged to get a shadow.) Westfold Horse-breeder played. Eowyn, Theodred, and breeder quest for 6, and Eowyn gets a resource. Wild Men of Dunland attached to the quest. Surge adds Plains of Enedwaith for 4 threat. Discard axehand for an additional progress for a total of three on the active location. Play Power of Orthanc to discard Wild Men, and threat is 29. Warrior engages and after shadow dealt sneak attack Spearman. Spearman defends, deals a damage, no shadow, and dies. Eomer attacks the warrior for 5 killing it. Refresh, threat is 30, discard hand, draw Feint and Firefoot, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 2: Veteran Axehand drawn. Play Firefoot on Eomer. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5, Eowyn gains a resource. Hithaeglir Stream added to the staging area for 5 threat. Discard Veteran Axehand to explore the active location. Travel to the Stream. Refresh, threat is 31, and time on quest is 1.

Turn 3: Hasty Stroke and The White Council drawn. Eowyn, breeder, and Theodred quest for 6. Dunland Chieftain added to staging area for 5 threat total. 1 progress on the active location. Optionally engage the Chieftan. Discard 1 encounter card and fortunately it is a location. Feint the Chieftan. Eomer attacks twice dealing 4 damage using the ready option on The White Council. Refresh, threat is 32, discard hand, draw Steward of Gondor and Gondorian Spearman, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 4: Sneak Attack and Gandalf drawn. Play [Gondorian Spearman] (/card/01029). Play Steward of Gondoron Eowyn and exhaust it. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5 with Eomer getting a resource. Another Dunland Chieftan added to the staging area for 5 threat resulting in no progress. Optionally engage second chieftain and discard encounter card. Berserker discarded and put into play engaged. Spearman defends the vs 1st Chieftan dealing a damage, shadow adds 1 attack, and dies. 2nd Chieftan attack defended by breeder, shadow adds 1 attack, and breeder dies. Berserker attack undefended, shadow gives an additional attack, 2 damage assigned to Eowyn. Second attack undefended, no shadow, and 2 damage assigned to Theodred. Eomer attacks for 7 at the Berseker and exhaust Firefoot to assign 2 extra damage to the first Chieftan killing both. Refresh, threat is 33, and time on quest is 1.

Turn 5: Blue Mountain Trader and Stand and Fight drawn. During resource phase action window, play Sneak Attack with Gandalf dealing 4 damage to the Chieftan. Then play Gandalf again in planning to kill the Chieftan. Play Blue Mountain Trader and Stand and Fight to being back Gondorian Spearman. Gandalf, Eowyn, and Theodred quest for 9 with Eomer gaining a resource. Another stream added to the staging area for 5 threat total. Active location explored and 1 progress placed on the quest. Travel to stream #2. Refresh, threat 34, discard nonexistent hand, draw Westfold Horse-breeder and Beorn, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 6: Westfold Horse-breeder and Power of Orthanc drawn. Play both Westfold Horse-breeders and get 2 Rohan Warhorses. Play Rohan Warhorse on Eomer. Breeders, Eowyn, and Theodred quest for 7 with Eomer getting a resource. Low on Provisions kills all allies and 1 damage to Theodred and Eomer. Discard Beorn to get 4 progress on the active location. Travel to the plains. Refresh, threat is 35, discard hand, draw Wandering Took and Guard of the Citadel, time in quest is 2.

Turn 7: No card drawn. Play Guard of the Citadel and Wandering Took. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5 with Eowyn getting a resource. Boar Clan Stalker added to the staging area for 3 threat resulting in active location being explore and 2 total progress on the quest. Stalker engages, Took defends, shadow adds 1 attack, no damage dealt. Eomer attacks and kills the Stalker. Refresh, threat is 36, and time on the quest is 1.

Turn 8: Blue Mountain Trader drawn and played. Eowyn, Theodred, and guard quest for 6. Berseker added to the staging area for 2 threat resulting in 6 total quest progress. Berserker engages, attacks, trader defends, no shadow, and 1 damage dealt. Eomer attacks and kills the enemy. Refresh, threat is 37, discard nonexistent hand, draw A Test of Will and Guard of the Citadel, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 9: Steward of Gondor drawn. Same questers for 6 with Theodred getting a resource. Hithaeglir Stream added to the staging area for 3 threat. Discard Steward to get 10 total progress on the quest. Travel to the Stream. Refresh, threat is 38, and time is 1.

Turn 10: Veteran Axehand and Faramir drawn. Play Faramir and Veteran Axehand. Eowyn, Theodred, guard, and Took quest for 7. Hills of Dunland added to the staging area for 2 threat. Exhaust Faramir and discard guard in hand to boost willpower to 12. Active location is explored and total progress on the quest is 16. Travel to hills and draw Dwarven Tomb. Play Dwarven Tomb to get Stand and Fight then play it to put Beorn in play. Refresh, threat is 39, discard hand, draw Wandering Took and The White Council, and time is 2.

Turn 11: Unexpected Courage drawn. Play Unexpected Courage on Eomer. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5 with Theodred getting a resource. Boar Clan Warrior added to the staging area for 2 threat. Active location explored. Warrior engages, attacks, trader defends, no shadow (In Need of Rest discarded, Yay!), and trader dies. Eomer attacks and kills the enemy. Refresh, threat is 40, and time is 1.

Turn 12: Snowbourn Scout drawn. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5. Off Track and 2 Dunland Ambushes whiff and finally Plains of Enedwaith added to the staging area for 2 threat. Stage 1b completed. Mounts and allies except Beorn discarded. Boar Clan Stalker put into play engaged, draw Stand and Fight, and stalker gets a resource. Beorn defends the stalker’s attack, no shadow (another In Need of Rest discarded!), and no damage dealt. Eomer attacks for 5 twice with Unexpected Courage to kill the Stalker. Stage 2b completed. Chief Turch engaged and time on 3b is 5. Refresh, threat is 41, and time on quest is 4.

Turn 12: Rohan Warhorse drawn and play on Eomer. Play Wandering Took and Snowbourn Scout putimg a progress on the active location. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5 with Theodred getting a resource. Frenzied Attack revealed drawing Firefoot and getting surge. Off Track attached to plains in staging area. Dunland Ambush attached to active location from surge. Next Surge attaches Wild Men of Dunland to the quest. Finally 2nd Plains of Enedwaith added to the staging area for 4 threat. Active location gets 1 progress for a total of 2. Turch attacks, scout defends, shadows add 3 attack, and scout dies. No point in attacking since Turch can’t leave play. Refresh, threat is 42, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 13: Stand and Fight drawn and play it to get Snowbourn Scout back into play putting a progress on the second plains. Deal a damage to Took for Wild Men. Play Firefoot on Eomer. Eowyn quests for 4. Hills of Dunland added to the staging area for 6 threat. Threat is 44. Turch attacks, scout defends, shadow adds 1 attack, and scout dies. Stand and Fight scout again placing another progress on 2nd plains exploring it. Refresh, threat is 45, last time counters removed. Turch attacks, scout defends, shadow adds 2 attack, and scout dies. Quest won by surving last attack.

Score 135 = 13 * 10 + 6 hero damage + 0 dead heroes – 1 victory

Postmortem

I think Power of Orthanc is a good addition to the deck. It helped keep a an early wild men from putting pressure on the deck. Experience might be skewed since it my first game without getting In Need of Rest on a hero but at least the deck now has another answer for it.

Dunland Berserker added to the staging area. Discard an axehand to add 2 progress to quest. Both enemies engage. Sneak attack an axehand after shadow cards dealt. Breeder defends the warrior’s attack, shadows add 4 attack, and breeder dies. Berserker’s attack defended by axehand, no shadow, and 1 damage dealt. Eomer attacks the Warrior for 5 and does the same to Berserker by exhausting warhorse killing both. Axehand returns to hand. Refresh, threat is 28, discard hand, draw Feint and Wandering Took.

Old South Road explored and added to the victory display. Stalker engages and take attack undefended, shadow adds 3 attack putting Theodred at 1 HP. Eomer attacks and deals 3 damage. Turn 3: Gondorian Spearman drawn and stalker gets a resource. Play Gondorian Spearman and Wandering Took. Play Celebrían’s Stone on Eowyn. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 7 and Eowyn gains a resource. In Need of Rest attached to Theodred. 7 Progress placed on the quest. Stalker attacks, Spearman defends and deals a damage, no shadow, and Spearman takes no damage. Eomer attacks and kills the stalker. Refresh, threat is 30, Theodred dies, discard hand, draw Rohan Warhorse and Wandering Took, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 4: Stand and Fight drawn. Play Wandering Took and Stand and Fight putting breeder back into play. A Took, breeder, and Eowyn quest for 8. Plains of Endwaith added to the staging area for 2 threat. Discard a warhorse to add 7 progress to the quest for a total of 14. Refresh, threat is 31, discard hand, draw Horn of Gondor and Stand and Fight, and time in quest is 2.

Turn 5: Feint drawn. Same questers for 8. Boar Clan Warrior added to staging area for 4 threat. Stage 1b completed. All allies and attachments except Spearman discarded. Put another warrior from encounter deck into play engaged. Draw Snowbourn Scout and give each warrior a shadow. Feint the first warrior. Spearman defends the second, deals 1 damage, shadows add 1 attack and prevent any more damage to the warrior, and Spearman dies. Eomer attacks the first one for 5 dealing it 4 damage. Stage 2b completed. Chief Turch engages. Stage 3b gain 5 time. Refresh, threat 32, and time on quest is 4.

Turn 6: A Test of Will drawn. Play Horn of Gondor on Eowyn. No one quests. Frenzied attack revealed and axehand drawn then discarded with scout. 2 threat gained for unsuccessfully questing. Threat is 34. I realize there is no way to defend all the attacks since the active location is boosting all the enemies and scoop.

Postmortem

I maybe should have wait to advance to stage 2 but I keep losing a hero to In Time of Need. It really kills subsequent draws and the number of characters available to me for stages 2 and 3. I’m finding I wish I had Lore for condition removal.

I see the doomed event that removed conditions is in Spirt. I’m going to put that in next time I play.

Turn 1: Veteran Axehand drawn and warrior gets a shadow. Play The White Council to move a resource from Eowyn to Eomer. Play Veteran Axehand and Snowbourn Scout. Active Location gets a progress token. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5 with a resource added to Eowyn. Boar Clan Stalker added to the staging area for 5 threat. Discard Gandalf for one more willpower and put 1 progress on Old South Road for a total of 2. Optionally engage stalker then warrior engages. First take stalker attack undefended shadow had stalker make an additional attack but no undefended damage so far. Again stalker undefended, shadow adds 1 attack so 1 damage assigned to Eowyn. Scout defends the warrior’s attack, shadows add 4 attack and scout dies. Eomer attacks and kills the stalker. Axehand attacks the warrior dealing 1 damage. Refresh, threat is 28, discard hand, draw Guard of the Citadel x2, warrior gets a shadow, and time on quest is 2 again.

Turn 2: Gandalf drawn and warrior gets second shadow. Theodred and Eowyn quest for 5 and give a resource to Eomer. In Need of Rest is attached to Theodred removing him from the quest but discard a guard to explore active location, put it in the victory display, and place 3 progress in the quest. Warrior attacks, Axehand defends, shadows add 1 attack which easily kills Axehand. Eomer attacks and kills the warrior. Refresh, threat is 30, time on quest is 1, and Theodred takes 1 damage.

Turn 3: Sneak Attack drawn. Play Guard of the Citadel. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5 and add a resource to Theodred. Hithaeglir stream added to the staging area for 3 threat and 2 progress on the quest. Travel to the stream and sneak attack Gandalf to reduce threat to 25. Refresh threat is 26, Theodred takes a damage, discard hand, draw Feint and The White Council, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 4: Snowbourn Scout and Guard of the Citadel #3 drawn. Play The White Council to move a resource from Eomer to Theodred and play the guard. Theodred, Eowyn, and a guard quest for 6. Theodred gains a resource. Hithaeglir Foothills added to the staging area. Surge reveals Frenzied Attack which draws Blue Mountain Trader and discards it and Snowbourn Scout. Active location explored, 1 progress added to the quest for a total of 6. Refresh threat is 27, Theodred takes a damage, and time on quest is 1.

Turn 5: Firefoot drawn and played on Eomer. Active location gains a resource. Eowyn, Theodred, and guards quest for 7. Frenzied Attack revealed drawing Steward of Gondor. Surge adds Dunland Berserker for 2 threat in staging area. Discard Steward for 1 more willpower. Active location explored and 2 progress on the quest for a total of 8. Berserker engages. Take attack undefended with Theodred since he is doomed this turn anyway. No shadow but Theodred dies valiantly. Eomer attacks and avenges him. Refresh, threat is 28, discard hand, time on quest is 2, and draw Celebrían’s Stone and Sneak Attack.

Turn 6: Wandering Took drawn and played. Guards and Eowyn quest for 6. Off Track revealed but can’t attach to a location. Surge reveals Low on Provisions basically have each character take a damage. Discard Celebrían’s Stone for a additional progress putting the quest at 15 total. Refresh, threat is 29, and time on quest is 1.

Turn 7: Gondorian Spearman drawn and played. Quest with Eowyn for 4. Dunland Ambush revealed and whiffs. Surge adds Hills of Dunland to the staging area for 2 threat 2 progress placed on the quest for a total of 17. Travel to the Hills drawing Westfold Horse-Breaker. Refresh, threat is 30, discard hand, draw Faramir and Steward of Gondor, time on quest is 2 again.

Turn 8: Dwarven Tomb drawn. Eowyn quests for 4. Frenzied Attack revealed drawing Snowbourn Scout and discarding it plus Faramir. Play Dwarven Tomb before quest resolution to get Stand and Fight. Active location explored and stage 1b completed. Forefoot and allies except Spearman discarded. Shuffle in discard pile and draw A Test of Will. Warrior gains a shadow then another for combat. Spearman defends dealing a damage. Shadows add 2 attack and Spearman dies. Eomer attacks for 5 killing the warrior thanks to Spearman damage. Stage 2b completed, Chief Turch engages and stage 3b begins. Refresh, threat is 31, time on the quest is 4.

Turn 9: Feint drawn. Eowyn quests for 4. Boar Clan Stalker added to the staging area. Discard Steward to place 2 progress on the active location. Stalker engages and time on the quest is 3. Play Stand and Fight to put Spearman into play. Feint the chief and Spearman defends the stalker dealing 1 damage. No shadow and spearman lives. This means that Eomer only attacks for 3 dealing 2 damage to the stalker and it lives too. Refresh, threat is 32, and time in quest is 2.

Turn 10: Stand and Fight drawn. Quest with Eowyn for 4. Dunland Chieftan added to the staging area. 1 progress placed on the active location. Chieftan does not engage. Spearman defends Turch’s attack, shadow gives him another attack, and Spearman dies. Stand and Fight the Spearman to defend second attack, no shadow but Spearman dies again. Emoer defends stalker attack, no shadow, and no damage dealt. Refresh, threat is 33, and time on the quest is 1.

Turn 11: Wandering Took drawn and played. Eowyn quests for 4. Hithaeglir Stream added to the staging area for 6 total threat. That is basically game. I can’t take 3 attacks let alone 4 if I delay Chieftan engagement by discarding test of will.

This one was very close. I maybe could have survived another undefended stalker if a second came out or canceled a treachery to survive. I had 6 resources on Eomer and 4 on Eowyn. I could have easily played Gandalf or Beorn. The draws were just not with me. Losing Theodred didn’t immediately mean I could not win which was nice but drawing all those dead leadership cards after certainly did not help. I consider stand and fighting Faramir before stage 1b completed but I wanted to be able to kill the Dunland enemy added by stage 2 plus it wasn’t guaranteed he would stick around. If I had known that I would get another stand and fight it might have worked better. So many times it seemed like the play that kept my options open for an enemy to appear like holding sneak attack and Gandalf ended up being a waste. Lots of interesting decisions to make with this deck against this scenario though.

Turn 2: Snowbourn Scout and Veteran Axehand drawn. Play both The White Council to basically move Eowyn’s resources to Eomer. Then play Firefoot on him. Also play the veteran and scout. The active location gains a progress. Eowyn, Theodred, and breeder quest for 6. Eowyn gains a resource. In Time of Need attached to Theodred (not again!). Discard Gandalf for 7 willpower, active location explored, and 3 progress placed on the quest for 5 total. Turn 3: Steward of Gondor drawn. Eowyn, Theodred, and breeder quest for 6 and added a resource to Theodred. Hills of Dunland added to the staging area for 2 threat. 4 progress added to the quest for a total of 9. Travel to the Hills drawing Steward of Gondor #2. Refresh, threat is 30, Theodred takes a damage, and time on quest is 1.

Turn 4: Veteran Axehand drawn. Play Steward of Gondor on Eowyn and exhaust. Play Veteran Axehand and Snowbourn Scout and place a progress on the active location. Same questers for 6. Dunland Ambush added to the active location. Surge reveals Frenzied Attack, Westfold Horse-breeder drawn, and it with Beorn discarded. Discard 2nd Steward for 7 willpower. Active location explored, Dunland Chieftain engaged with me and I have no cards in hand for the forced effect. Chieftain attack defended by a scout, no shadow effect (shadow is another chieftain, haha), and scout dies. Eomer and axehands attack for 11 killing the chieftain. Refresh, threat is 31, Theodred takes a damage, discard nonexistent hand, draw 2 Wandering Tooks, and time on quest 2 again.

Turn 5: Gondorian Spearman drawn and exhaust Steward. Theodred and Breeder quest for 2. Eomer gains a resource. Dunland Tribesmen added to the staging area for 1 threat and Unexpected Courage drawn. 1 progress added to the quest for 15 total. Optionally engage Dunland Tribesmab. Scout defends the attack, shadow prevents damage to the enemy, and scout dies. Refresh, threat is 32, Theodred dies, and time on the quest is 1.

Turn 6: Faramir drawn and exhaust Steward. Play Unexpected Courage on Eomer. Play both Wandering Tooks and Gondorian Spearman. Quest with the Tooks and breeder for 3. Boar Clan Warrior added to the staging area for 2 threat resulting in 1 progress on the quest. Boar Clan Warrior engages. Tribesman attacked defended by Spearman, takes 1 damage, shadow adds 1 attack, and Spearman dies. Axehand attack defends warrior attack, shadow adds 1 attack, and Axehand dies. Eomer attacks each enemy thanks to Unexpected Courage killing both. Refresh, threat is 33, discard Faramir, draw Hasty Stroke and Westfold Horse-breeder, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 7: Guard of the Citadel drawn. Quest with Tooks and breeder for 3. Hithaeglir Foothills added to the staging area. Surge reveals Dunland Ambush and is discarded. Second surge reveals Low on Provisions assigning 6 damage (2 to the Tooks each, 1 to Axehand, and 1 to Eowyn.) Refresh, threat is 34, and time on quest is 1.

Turn 8: Snowbourn Scout drawn and foothills gains a resource. Eowyn and breeder quest for 5. In Need of Rest revealed. I concede this game because losing a Hero during Stage 3 would be game over. I could play so one dies before stage 3 if an enemy comes up but pretty sure I couldn’t pull the victory off even then.

The Shadow that kept me from attacking the tribesmen on turn 5 messed with my plan to advance the quest on turn 6. I decided to delay completion since I would have trouble dealing 2 enemies after losing most of my allies. That ended up being a bad idea because more chances of a treachery messing things up more which is exactly what happened.

The Dunland Trap with Minimum Purchase Rohan Deck – January 11, 2020

Introduction

I skipped over Into Fangorn because Dave created a minimum purchase deck for me to try. A bit of background on this since it is when Dave and I started talking on Reddit a couple years ago. Dave posted on r/lotrlcg about an episode highlighting a deck he built. I mentioned there how I appreciated minimum purchase decks (decks using only the player cards that came with expansions necessary to play a scenario) as a great entry point for new players. Dave thought it was a great idea and asked for a scenario to build one for. I suggested The Dunland Trap and he made one and an episode highlighting it. I hadn’t quite gotten to Dunland Trap at the time, but my excitement to try it was strong.

(You may note I refer to Westfold Horse-Breaker instead of Westfold Horse-breeder in here. I accidentally put in breaker instead of breeder. I don’t think it made a huge difference but still, whoops!)

Setup: Boar Clan Warrior in the staging area. Old South Road is the active location.

Turn 1: Wandering Took drawn and boar clan warrior gets a Shadow card. Play warhorse on Eomer. Play The White Council to move Theodred’s resource to Eowyn then play Wandering Took. Theodred and Eowyn quest for 5 and give Eowyn a resource. Dunland Ambush attached to the active location. Surge reveals another ambush that is attached. Second surge reveals frenzied attack drawing Gandalf and discarding all allies in hand. Warrior gets second shadow card. 3 progress placed on active location because I don’t want to fight 3 enemies this turn. Warrior engages and gets 3rd shadow then attacks. Took defends, shadows add 3 attack and warrior will attack again, Took dies. Eomer defends, shadow adds 1 attack, and 2 damage dealt. Use The White Council to ready Eomer then attack and kill the warrior. Refresh, threat is 28, time counters removed drawing Gondorian Spearman and A Test of Will.

Turn 2: draw Blue Mountain Trader. Quest only with Theodred because I can’t play anything to deal with 2 enemies this turn. Add a resource to Eowyn. Frenzied attack revealed, draw Snowbourn Scout, discard all allies from hand. Make 1 progress exploring Old South Road. Search and engage 2 Boar Clan Stalkers. Eowyn defends the first one, shadow adds 1 attack and no damage dealt. (Time to roll the dice. ) 2nd one undefended, no shadow, and no damage! Eomer attacks the first one for 3 damage. Refresh, threat is 29, time on quest is 1.

Turn 3: Veteran Axehand drawn and played. Stalkers get a resource. Eowyn quests for 4. Boar Clan Warrior added to the staging area for 2 threat and 2 progress placed on the quest. Warrior engages. Axehand defends the warrior attack first, no shadow but he dies anyway. First stalker attack take undefended (it worked last time!), no shadow, and 1 damage on Eowyn. Second stalker attack also undefended, shadow adds 1 attack, and 2 damage to Theodred. Eomer attacks the damaged stalker for 5 killing it. Use warhorse to ready Eomer. Then attack second stalker with Eomer and Theodred killing it. Refresh, threat is 30, draw Stand and Fight and Westfold Horse-Breaker, give warrior a shadow, and time on quest is 2.

Turn 4: Rohan Warhorse drawn and shadow added to warrior. Play Westfold Horse-Breaker and Stand and Fight to put Spearman into play. Quest with Theodred and Eowyn for 5 giving a resource to Eowyn. Wild Men of Dunland attached to the quest and Dunland Berserker to the staging area for 2 threat. 3 progress placed on the quest. Berserker engages and attacks, horse breaker defends, no shadow, and ally dies. Spearman defends warrior dealing one damage, shadows add 3 , Spearman dies. Eomer attacks and kills warrior. Then readies with warhorse to attack and kill berserker. Refresh, threat is 31, time on quest is 1.

Turn 5: draw Feint. Play second warhorse on Theodred. Deal a damage to Eowyn. Eowyn and Theodred quest for 5. Eowyn gains a resource. Low of Provisions revealed which will deal 3 damage to characters I control. This forces me to kill a hero and next turn I’ll lose another. I’m conceding this one as there is no way to continue with just 1 hero.

Postmortem

I think I got really unlucky turn 1 with 2 ambushes. Plus the turns I had Test of Will weren’t the turns I really needed it. I’ll have to try again later and see if I can get a better set of draws. I’m considering putting Legacy of Númenor in to help get an ally or 2 out first turn.
