Deadman’s Dike with a Revised Card Pool Minimum Purchase Deck – January 29, 2023

Introduction

This quest for those have not played it before has an additional loss condition. The player(s) lose if their deck is empty. Much like a mill deck in Magic the Gathering, it forces players to discard cards from their deck in order to win. Those that haven’t played Magic, it is the evil version of the Dwarf Mining mechanism. (I know the designers called it Delving in a livestream back in 2021. I called it mining long before that because it make sense with Dwarves and similar to milling from Magic.)

Knowing about the additional loss condition, I made two changes to my deck to counter it.

  1. Removed almost all card draw
  2. Added 2 copies of Will of the West

Card draw accelerates the end of the game. It is unfortunate I’ll have to do without it considering how reliant the deck is on Steward of Gondor. Will of the West basically is the hard counter to encounter deck mining you, but I had to hope both copies and Dwarven Tomb aren’t mined.

Recursion effects are handy in this quest letting the player(s) pull back something that is mined. Erebor Hammersmith and a second copy of Stand and Fight added to take advantage of this. Miner of the Iron Hills added because of Heavy Curse. Heavy Curse is a treachery condition attachment that increases resource cost of a card if a copy is in the discard. It can really bog down the game since the discard pile quickly fills up. Heavy Curse and some similar effects in the quest is why many cards only have 2 copies instead of 3.

Campaign Resolution

  • 1 Protect the Innocent damage
  • Protect the Innocent becomes Arnor Ravaged.
  • Added to the campaign pool
  • Thaurdir’s Spite
  • Amarthuil’s Courage Iarion’s Pendant has been great, but +1 hit point on Amarthuil is going to be big for making him into a solid secondary defender. I also know it will really help when I get to Battle of Carn Dum.

Postmortem

Denethor with Unexpected Courage made this much easier especially once I cleared out the shades. Also Iarion’s Pendant canceling the When Revealed on the Cursed Dead at just the right moment. It’s going to hurt not having it for later scenarios but it goes into my deck and Amarthuil’s Courage will be put into play at setup. As Ted often points out a card is only good if you draw it. I won’t have an issue with that for Amarthuil’s Courage.

Deadmen’s Dike with Lore Tactics Angmar Awakened Minimum Purchase Deck – August 18, 2022

Introduction

I know the last time I attempted Deadman’s Dike with my last minimum purchase deck that I said I would try it again. I had this idea about making dual sphere deck to help speed up my early game. Also I wanted to improve the combat ability which to including Tactics. Particularly for Derndingle Warrior which I know from my old Mono Tactics deck is a great defender. Something that my previous decks had been missing.

  • I concede it there because Thaurdir will attack again killing Aragorn leaving Iarion to die to Thaurdir’s Damned.

Postmortem

The increased combat power of this deck did better than my last one. I was running low on cards in my deck with only 14 left. I was feeling the lack of resource acceleration with Heavy Curse out there to start. Plus the combo with Terror in the North to slow things down right away didn’t help. I didn’t see either Miner of the Iron Hills to really help. The better defense definitely helped as Denethor could block the starting Shade for a while. Derndingle Warrior at least blocked twice before dying. I was still sitting on a lot of cards that didn’t get played however. I might just get lucky if the cards fall the right way with this deck or maybe Easy mode would make a big difference. It is also tempting to look at Leadership Tactics. Then I use Horn of Gondor and Valiant Sacrifice with chump blocks to make that all less painful. I would lose access to healing other than Honour Guard damage cancelation although my allies and heroes managed to soak a lot of damage from the Thaurdir’s Damned. The Angmar Awakened campaign box is supposed to release in the next week. Hopefully the print and play files will come out right away and I can just dive in with Intruders in Chetwood and take it from there. Maybe there will be some boons to help steer things in a certain direction.

Deadmen’s Dike with New Angmar Awakened Minimum Purchase Deck – July 26, 2022

Introduction

I did change the deck a bit. Mostly to bring the cost curve down and increase potential willpower. I switched to Deadman’s Dike for testing because it is a harder more unique scenario. If the deck can do well against it, then the deck has a good shot at most of the other scenarios. The result was a short game in which I find out that Heavy Curse makes Elven-light very difficult to use.

Postmortem

Heavy Curse is a bit rough on Elven-light. It wouldn’t be a big deal if I had gotten Steward, but I probably would have put Steward on Beravor to get Baleful Shade under Forest Snare. Shadows are just as bad in this scenario as they were in Intruders but didn’t get Hasty Stroke. I’m still feeling the lack of defense in this very limited card pool. I might just have to try Lore Denethor and see if 3 defense to start makes a difference. I’ll probably try this deck once more to make sure it wasn’t just a rough start with so many enemies.
