Postmortem

I noticed much later that I missed the Methedras Orc forced effect to shuffle in one of my cards to the out of play deck on turn 4. I don’t think it that much of difference because I had a pretty good board state through most of the game and several cards I held onto throughout the whole game without playing just in case I needed them later.

Postmortem

I sciop because I keep just falling behind in board state. I’m thinking the deck can beat the quest, but it’s going to take several plays to get the right draws to build up a stable board similar to one of my earlier games and get Mugash out. I’m probably going to have to either play a power deck against this or come back to it. I just don’t have the time to play this a dozen or so times for the right draws, and get to play all the other quests in the cycle.

Across the Ettenmoors with a Revised Card Pool Minimum Purchase Deck – March 12, 2023

Introduction

I decided that my plan would be to rely on my low starting threat (that is now 4 lower thanks to Fend Off Despair) and quest hard the entire game. The goal is to minimize gaining Losing Time burdens. I don’t think I can win in 3 rounds, but getting only 2 wouldn’t be too bad.

The deck is still Leadership heavy, but I did make some changes. My previous list worked well for questing considering I put up over 50 willpower on the last round. I swapped Beorn, all three Guardians of Arnor, 1 copy of Celebrian’s Stone, Star Brooch, 1 copy of Sword of Numenor, and 1 copy of Valiant Sacrifice for Scout Ahead, 3 A Test of Will, a second copy of Gleowine, a third copy of Daughter of the Nimrodel, Galadhrim Weaver, and Faramir. I wanted to get more willpower sooner and an early Faramir definitely part of that plan. Scout Ahead is my backup plan to hopefully remove a Losing Time. I think this is possible since Easy mode removes a fair number of cards. I’ve had to reshuffle the encounter deck in other scenarios this campaign.

Postmortem

I went into this quest planning to minimize how many Losing Time burdens I got. Questing hard to do so while relying on my low starting threat worked! I can imagine it going slightly better with getting Fend Off Despair as my second side quest to clear and playing Determined to ready Denethor or another character. Still I won in one try and only got 2 burdens so it seems pretty good to me. The quest is definitely more tense when you really have to minimize the amount of turns to avoid gaining too many of the burdens. If I was playing with a full card pool I’d probably play a Victory Display deck to use Scout Ahead and Out of the Wild to remove them from the encounter deck. That would be a much longer and more involved game though. Next Treachery of Rhudaur is going to be interesting. Hopefully the campaign doesn’t reward you for completing more of the initial side quests. I know from my previous experience I’ll only get to complete one of them.

  • Mail of Earnur picked and added to my hand. If I was playing with a full card pool Silverthorn would be tempting. I like victory display decks and curious if it would help make it better in solo play. Something to consider whenever I decide to replay this campaign. The Mail of Earnur makes the most sense though. Usually I concede when Denethor dies to a bad shadow because of his 3 hit points. It will be great on Amarthuil too at Battle of Carn Dum.

Campaign Resolution

  • Starting threat lowered by 2 for completing Fend Off Despair.
  • Mail of Earnur added to the Campaign Pool.
  • Gandalf is Determined.
  • A copy of Gandalf is the only unique card in the Captured Deck, but a copy is in play. No cards barred from being in my deck for future scenarios.

Postmortem

My deck worked although not optimized for this scenario. I really shouldn’t have included Valiant Sacrifice, Gleowine, and Beorn. Beorn could still be useful with Sneak Attack but it was a big risk with just a single copy and the campaign resolution. The card draw from Gleowine and Valiant Sacrifice really wasn’t needed. Favor of the Valar would be a good addition as insurance in case rescuing Gandalf or Faramir takes a long time. I probably could have also kept a couple copies of A Test of Will and/or Hasty Stroke. Even Faramir probably wasn’t necessary, he does make getting Stage 3 completed much easier. I also thought Ranger Summons would work well in this scenario since it can put an ally into play although not an ally card. Also the Easy mode encounter deck on stage 2 isn’t that thick. I only had a few cards left when I advanced to Stage 3.

The Wastes of Eriador with a Revised Card Pool Minimum Purchase Deck – February 25, 2023

Introduction

I’m back with a slight modification taking out one copy of Self Preservation and one of Warden of Annuminas for 2 copies of Daughter of Nimrodel. I think that will help make healing a little easier to find and a little more flexibility on healing.

Postmortem

I think I played too conservatively early on. I really should have used Sneak Attack Gandalf to draw cards and get my board moving. I was sitting on 20+ resources on Eowyn at one point. I kept expecting to really need Sneak Attack Beorn (which I did once), but then I should have been more aggressive at getting allies out. Denethor with 4 defense is a good defender except for the 3 hit points. Maybe I should have got him the boon for +2 hit points. That would have worked well with the healing available in Lore. Still I spent a lot of the game without healing so perhaps I made the right call, but it is often on a knife’s edge if he will be OK afterward. Amarthuil with Amarthiul’s Courage boon helped, but only once since I didn’t give him a Self Preservation. Not that big a loss since he was my main attacker until Halbarad got 2 swords.

I made a big rules mistake in canceling that one shadow during Night. That probably had a big impact considering how much I used Denethor’s ability. I’m not going to replay for a clean win since this was a pretty long one. Not making progress at Night adds a lot to the length of the game. I also forgot about my one Valar token which could have been pretty helpful.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to Escape from Mount Gram. It was a really interesting quest and curious how much the campaign adds to it. I remember last time I started with Halbarad since he has built in action advantage. I’ll have to look and see if Eowyn could carry me until another hero is rescued. If not, I’ll have to sideboard in a lot of Leadership cards.

Attempt 4

Setup: Methedras in the staging area. Threat is 28. Time is 2.

Starting Hand: Keys of OrthancBlade of GondolinIsengard MessengerWestfold Horse-breederLórien Guide, and Gondorian Spearman

Turn 1: Spearman #2 drawn. Play Keys of Orthanc on Eowyn. Play Westfold Horse-breeder, find Rohan Warhorse, and add to hand. Play Spearman with Doomed 1. Exhaust keys for a resource on Eowyn and threat is 29. Grima and Eowyn quest for 6. Prowling wolf added to the staging are for 5 threat. Time is 3. Travel to Methedras and engage wolf. Take attack undefended, no shadow, one damage dealt to Eomer. Eomer and Spearman attack and kill the wolf. Refresh, threat is 30, and time is 2.

Turn 2: Dwarven Tomb drawn. Play Blade of Gondolin Doomed 1 on Eomer, exhaust keys for a resource, and threat is 31. Play Rohan Warhorse on Eomer. Play Lórien Guide. Grima, Eowyn, and guide quest for 7 and a progress on the active location. Broken lands added for 2 threat. Active location explored, search 3, no enemies, and add Lórien Guide #2 to hand. Time is 3. Travel to Broken Lands. Refresh, threat is 32, time is 2.

Turn 3: Gandalf drawn. Play Isengard Messenger. Play second Spearman with doomed 1, exhaust keys, and threat is 33. Eowyn, Grima, messenger, and guide quest for 9 and a progress on the active location. Staging adds Orc Hound and Mugash’s Lair for 5 threat. 4 progress placed on active location. Lair adds Mugash to the staging area. Mugash and Orc Hound engage, breeder exhausted, and they attack. Orc Hound attack defended by Spearman, deals a damage, shadows gives another attack, and Spearman dies. 2nd attack undefended, shadow adds 1 attack, and Grima dies. Mugash attack defended by 2nd Spearman, deals a damage, and dies. Eomer attacks hound and kills it. Blade puts last progress on broken lands. Eomer readies with warhorse and attacks Mugash dealing 2 damage.

I pretty much scoop at this point. It is going to be difficult to muster the willpower to get through the last stage without Grima to capture Mugash and let Eowyn still quest.

Attempt 5

Setup: Methedras in staging area. Threat is 28 and time is 2.

Starting hand: Westfold Horse-breederGandalfStand and FightNorthern TrackerKeys of Orthanc, and Henamarth Riversong.

Turn 1: Stand and Fight #2 drawn. Play Keys of Orthanc on Eowyn. Play Westfold Horse-breeder with Doomed 1, fail to find a mount, exhaust keys for a resource, and threat is 30. Play Henamarth Riversong. Eowyn and Grima quest for 6. Take cover deals them a damage. Orc skirmisher added to staging area for 5 threat. Time is 3. Travel to Methedras. Skirmisher optionally engaged and time is 2. Breeder defends and shadow adds another attack.

I just scoop on that. The shadows adding extra attacks and exhausting characters keep messing with my ability to plan for battles.

Postmortem

I felt like I was in a pretty good spot most of the game. I was expecting to burst through Stage 1 now that I had Faramir in play. I had plenty of attack power with Beorn, Amarthuil, and the Wardens. I think damaging Eowyn at setup with Cold from Angmar was a mistake. I couldn’t use her ability to discard Beorn until I had her healed. Self Preservation being my only healing then meant I wanted to put it on her instead of Denethor or Amarthuil. Also maybe I should reconsider swapping out all the Daughters of Nimrodel. Self Preservation will be nice for Amarthuil but the flexibility to heal any hero would still help more than healing just on one. Wardens of Annuminas couldn’t contribute to questing like Northern Trackers could have. Granted I wasn’t in danger of location lock. If anything, the main advantage was I could always count on leaving the Wardens ready for combat.

To Catch An Orc with a Minimum Purchase Deck 3 – January 18, 2020

Introduction

Sorry for another interlude from my Angmar Awakened campaign.

I made some minor tweaks to avoid threating out again. I added another Galadhrim’s Greeting and 3 copies of Core Set Gandalf for threat reduction. No more Wizard’s Voices and Saruman.

Turn 6: Deep Knowledge drawn and played drawing Veteran Axehand and Northern Tracker. Threat is 37. Play Axehand with Doomed 1 and threat is 38. Eowyn and Grima quest for 6. Broken Lands #2 added to the staging area for 6 threat. Time is 1. (This is looking like game over.) quest forces effect adds 4 threat to the staging area and my next draw will only add 2 more willpower. Scoop to location lock.

Gandalf definitely helps with threat management. The shadows that exhaust a character are tough to deal with. Hesitant to put in Hasty Stroke because the deck for trisphere is already pretty spirit heavy. Losing Lórien Guide to out of play deck hurt. Those were awesome in my earlier plays.

Deadman’s Dike with a Revised Card Pool Minimum Purchase Deck – January 29, 2023

Introduction

This quest for those have not played it before has an additional loss condition. The player(s) lose if their deck is empty. Much like a mill deck in Magic the Gathering, it forces players to discard cards from their deck in order to win. Those that haven’t played Magic, it is the evil version of the Dwarf Mining mechanism. (I know the designers called it Delving in a livestream back in 2021. I called it mining long before that because it make sense with Dwarves and similar to milling from Magic.)

Knowing about the additional loss condition, I made two changes to my deck to counter it.

  1. Removed almost all card draw
  2. Added 2 copies of Will of the West

Card draw accelerates the end of the game. It is unfortunate I’ll have to do without it considering how reliant the deck is on Steward of Gondor. Will of the West basically is the hard counter to encounter deck mining you, but I had to hope both copies and Dwarven Tomb aren’t mined.

Recursion effects are handy in this quest letting the player(s) pull back something that is mined. Erebor Hammersmith and a second copy of Stand and Fight added to take advantage of this. Miner of the Iron Hills added because of Heavy Curse. Heavy Curse is a treachery condition attachment that increases resource cost of a card if a copy is in the discard. It can really bog down the game since the discard pile quickly fills up. Heavy Curse and some similar effects in the quest is why many cards only have 2 copies instead of 3.

  • Added to the campaign pool
  • Thaurdir’s Spite
  • Amarthuil’s Courage Iarion’s Pendant has been great, but +1 hit point on Amarthuil is going to be big for making him into a solid secondary defender. I also know it will really help when I get to Battle of Carn Dum.

Postmortem

Denethor with Unexpected Courage made this much easier especially once I cleared out the shades. Also Iarion’s Pendant canceling the When Revealed on the Cursed Dead at just the right moment. It’s going to hurt not having it for later scenarios but it goes into my deck and Amarthuil’s Courage will be put into play at setup. As Ted often points out a card is only good if you draw it. I won’t have an issue with that for Amarthuil’s Courage.

The Weather Hills with Wandering the Lost Realm a Revised Card Pool Minimum Purchase Deck 3 – January 20, 2023

Introduction

I put in some more repeatable healing with a third Daughter of Nimrodel and 2 Self Preservations. I also put in another East Road Ranger and 2 Hasty Strokes taking out the Curious Brandybucks, Lore of Imladris, Will of the West, and 1 Stand and Fight. Hopefully the deck performs a bit more consistently this time around.

Postmortem

I noticed in creating this post that I forgot on turn 2 to give Biting Wind surge. Oops

The grace of the Valar made up for not having Steward early. I actually had Steward in my first hand but only 2 allies and no healing. I still didn’t have healing but I liked having more allies to start with. The Unexpected Courages also made defending much easier. Also as I suspected after my last game, I needed to be more careful about when I explored an active location to avoid getting too many enemies. I’m sure I could have played this over and over to get the right sequence to win without Valar tokens. Guardians of Arnor also would be pretty awesome in this quest. It only takes 1 enemy to get them to 2 defense to block Cornered and Angmar Orcs. It’s not hard to get to 3 enemies. All the Dunedain with engaged enemy bonus would work well in this quest there’s a number of enemies but they’re fairly low attack except the Angmar Captain. Shadows would be a problem for keeping them around but Forest Snare would help with that. I almost got location locked, but if I had found Norther Tracker then it wouldn’t have been an issue. Ancient Causeway, Concealed Orc-camp, and Exposed Ridge all have 2 or 3 quest points. Not a big deal for the tracker. A bit of missed opportunity to highlight the Dunedain allies and Heir of Valandil with this quest. Still it worked especially since the late game is all a big questing sprint.

I already know I’ll have to modify the deck again for Deadman’s Dike. Will of the West at the very least needs to go back in. Most likely much of the card draw will need to be taken out. Stand and Fight and Erebor Hammersmith will also be good tech to put in. We’ll see if I can manage to put that all in or not.
