The Land of Sorrow – April 2, 2022

Introduction

My little campaign through The Paths of Mirkwood gave me a quite some time to look into a different way to beat this quest. I could have sworn I saw a Grey Wanderer decklist someone else posted for this, but perhaps someone just mentioned using one to beat it. Anyway, I liked the idea. I’ve tried a few different Gandalf ones, but they usually are more thematic. I needed some power to get going quickly to deal with the Wardens.

I decided to start with jban’s One Deck that used hero Gandalf. I swapped out the side quests and the location control cards to help to squeeze in the 2 Secrecy resource acceleration cards, Timely Aid and Resourceful. I also took the side quest bonus allies for more just good non-unique allies Galadriel’s Handmaiden, Ranger of Cardolan, and third Warden of Healing. This was primarily to ensure I can use the contract’s ability to play an ally sometimes without Wizard Pipe, Gildor, or Narya. Speaking of Gildor, I put him in for Gimli since his ability combos with Gandalf’s to play the top card of the deck. I also took out Asfaloth and Light of Valinor since I didn’t have a Noldor or Silvan hero. I put in a couple of Flame of Anor to make sure Gandlaf could handle the Warden that can only be attacked by heroes.

Postmortem

This was the smoothest game with a Gandalf Grey Wanderer deck I’ve ever played. Wow did the 3 Timely Aids come through for me with Gildor and Beorn early on. Narya kept readying and boosting them so I could use Beorn to attack and defend most turns. Willpower was a little behind to start. I might have gotten lucky with Gildor and Firyal early. It will be interesting to see when I play this deck again if the Handmaidens, Bilbo, and Arwen early on would be sufficient.
