Core Campaign Journey Along the Anduin 2 – February 12, 2022

Overview

I’ve reset after my last attempt went horribly awry with a bad shadow. This time I’m a good player and remember to draw cards with Beravor. It makes a really big difference in my game! Card draw I will say ends up being the MVP.

Starting Hand

  • Guard of the Citadel
  • Steward of Gondor
  • Sneak Attack
  • Snowbourne Scout
  • Hasty Stroke
  • A Test of Will
  • (I’m keeping this hand hoping to draw Gandalf or Forest Snare. I think that’s reasonable if I can use Beravor’s card draw turn 1 or turn 2.)

6 Combat Phase

6.2 Action(s)

  • Sneak Attack to put Gandalf into play (This is the action window to do this so Gandalf can block the Hill Troll for me.)
  • Draw Unexpected Courage, Guard of the Citadel 2, and Stand and Fight (I don’t need to use the 4 damage on the Hill Troll since it won’t be attacking. Same for the goblins because I want them to damage Gloin for resources. My threat is fine. I need allies for questing power in stage 2 and attack power to whittle away at the troll. Building up my board state is the goal now.)

1.3 Action(s)

2.2 Planning

  • Self Preservation 2 on Gloin
  • Protector of Lorien on Beravor (Best on Beravor since they also have Unexpected Courage.)
  • Northern Tracker (I could save up so that I discard Beorn with Eowyn then Stand and Fight him into play. I don’t think that is necessary. The Hill Troll is neutralized. Two of the other big enemies discarded. Only threat right now is another Hill Troll. I have the resources available for hard cast Gandalf. I also have Protector of Lorien with plenty of cards for extra defense.)

    • Mendor
    • Guards of the Citadel x2
  • Henamarth (I like knowing what is coming off the encounter deck, but I’d rather not see the other Hill Troll. I’m pretty well set up. Plus 2 Gandalfs with 11 resources on Beravor should help with the extra encounter cards on Stage 2.)

  • 6.8.3 Damage Dealt – 5 (9 / 9)

  • Gleowine
  • Erebor Hammersmith
  • (I sent so many because I have 2 A Test of wills for Necromancer’s Reach. I have Snowbourne if I need to chump block. Most of the really big enemies are discarded. The staging area is clear. I really won’t be in a better position if I take 2 turns to get through Stage 2.)
  • Total Quest Power = 20

3.2 Action(s)

  • Ready Beravor with Unexpected Courage.

3.3 Staging

  • Advance to Stage 3
  • Dol Guldur Beastmaster
  • Dol Guldur Orcs
  • Deal 2 damage to Eowyn (I’m doing this so she will be the prisoner in Escape from Dol Guldur. The deck is so heavy in Leadership and Lore. I hate losing my main questing hero, but I don’t need her Spirit resources as much as the other 2.)

Postmortem

I really thought the game was over when that Brown Lands came out. Beravor’s draw into the Mendor’s Support really saved the game for me. The only other answer for that flip would have been discarding Snowbourne Scout with Eowyn then playing Stand and Fight on it. I didn’t have those cards. I mention it only in case someone runs into a similar situation. I’m really happy with how the game went from there. I got to show how Gandalf’s threat reduction ability can be really key at certain points in this game. It really gave me the time I needed to build up plus find Forest Snare. A second sneak attack Gandalf after engaging the Hill Troll let me avoid gaining the Scarred burden. Looking at the campaign card for resolution I noticed I forgot to attach Valor to a hero. I’m just going to say I put it on Gloin. It doesn’t change anything in this game. Healing to start the game is going to be awesome on Gloin.
