The City of Ulfast with Caldara + Burglar’s Turn – October 12, 2021

Overview

I took a bit of hiatus from Vengeance of Mordor for almost the past month. I got a lot of multiplayer in the meant time. Especially during the Can’t of the Rings digital con. I felt recharged to go back these quests. Lacking any great ideas for a low starting threat deck with a defender that could handle the City Guard, I went with Bard Lee’s Caldara + Burglar’s Turn deck. I like all the contracts but I find Burglar’s Turn to be really fun multiplayer. I haven’t used it much solo and have been meaning to try this deck anyway as I generally like the combo play of Caldara.

The quest itself is a doozy. Lots of threat raises to contend with. Then the City Guard engagement cost getting lower each round spent on a quest stage makes it very tense. I was surprised also there are a number of ways enemies particularly the City Guard can get extra attacks. This was a major issue for this deck as Dain can only defend once unless a lucky loot flip is Magic Ring. Still it had some tricks up its sleeve resulting in a tense but fun game.

Postmortem

I almost scooped when I revealed the one shadow that would have raised my threat to 49 but then I remembered I had Elfhelm to save me. I also could have used Dwarven Tomb to get Elrond’s Counsel then to lower my threat by 3 and stayed in it. That City Guard is a pain. If I had a regular deck with Dain he’d probably been better. Then he could have some readying for all those extra attacks. At least the Knights of Belfalas kept chumping and getting themselves all back to chump again.
