The River Running with Mono Tactics Pseudo Questing – June 19, 2021

Overview

I really liked my first turn play putting out Followed and Outmatched. Then I used Dunedain Hunter to look at the top 5 encounter cards for an enemy to stick into those traps. Unfortunately, the only enemy was Easterling Outrider with 1 threat. I was hoping for at least a 2 threat enemy. It was easy to just keep blocking it every turn with its 2 attack at least. The game went pretty much downhill from there. You’d think with Legolas, Grimbeorn, and the Dunedain Hunter to start I’d have decent starting combat power. Unfortunately, I got a Rider of Rhun right of the bat that I had to leave up in the staging area. Then next turn a 3 threat so I had 10 threat to quest against. I still had to leave the Rider in the staging area and try to take on the Warrior. It basically went like that for the next few turns of the game. I could usually kill one enemy but I’d still get another threat one that would either be in the staging area or return to it with Easterling Horse.

I think my mono Tactics deck as constructed just isn’t working out. I liked trying to use Followed as cheap questing power. My Pippin player side rejoiced at using Dunedain Hunter to set it up, but this probably is just the wrong scenario for it. The enemies are generally ones that you don’t want to keep around with archery or being able to return to the staging area. It’s still somewhat useful, but I think I would have been better served by other means to boost willpower. The archery and taking a damage here and there from enemy attacks on Grimbeorn are making the lack of healing felt.

I’m calling it there. I have 3 attacks still and I’m definitely losing a hero either by blocking or taking 1 undefended. The archery and taking a damage here and there from enemy attacks on Grimbeorn are making the lack of healing felt. Also it seems I keep having enemies just returning to the staging area all the time. Three hunters is looking more and more like the way to go because I can get the willpower and combat ramp I need plus reliable healing. I’m also tempted to try a staging area attack deck. Maybe it’s time to dust off my Galadriel, Leadership Eomer and Fastred deck or Tactics Bilbo, Bard, and Fastred? Chad’s guarded deck with Tactics Bilbo, Haldir, and Leadership Eomer could be good too. I think some build with Tactics Bilbo would be really good. He’d cancel out some of the high threat of the enemies even if they bounce back up.

I did like my first turn of getting an enemy put on Followed and Outmatched. I just wish it was a higher threat one, but it was easy to just keep blocking it. This probably is just the wrong scenario for it. The enemies gaining attachments, archery, and returning to the staging area are a bad match for it. It’s still somewhat useful, but I think I would have been better served by other means to boost willpower.
