Mount Gundabad with Dooming Dale for the Win by The Mormegil – May 8, 2021

Overview

I read about the quest and it was recommended to have ways to cancel treacheries. I also saw Dagnir was back with her 7 attack and could have multiple attacks a turn. I was originally thinking of building something with Spirit Dain or victory display cards. I was not feeling terribly inspired when I tried putting a few decklists together. I couldn’t settle on a direction to take a Dain deck bouncing between mining, Dwarf swarm, or some combination with victory display. I also toyed with an Ent victory display deck. Victory display fell by the wayside as I realized I would have trouble getting a defender built up to block Dagnir reliably. The victory display cards seemed like it would crowd out the defense boosts needed.

It eventually came to the time when I could play a game, and I didn’t have a deck made. I recalled that SystemS5 talked about playing Mount Gundabad the r/lotrlcg’s What Did You Play this Week? Apr 27th – May 3rd, 2021 thread with a Dale deck against it. I pulled up The Mormegil’s Dooming Dale deck. I’ve played it before and found it to be a pretty good one. It also had the elements I was looking for, Test of Will and a way to get a very strong defender for Dagnir.

I have to say, I enjoyed this quest. It gives you some time to build up with Dagnir only attacking if you optional engage, on certain stages, or once you complete 5 quest stages. My game wasn’t very long at 11 turns, but I may have lucked out. The Upper Halls was one of the two quests I could pick from after my first planning phase. I completed it and got The First Forge in the caves deck right away. I can definitely see this one dragging on like the earlier scenarios in this cycle have for me if that quest stage is buried in the quest deck. By the time, I had to fight Dagnir, I felt ready. That’s even after a big setback in my board state thanks to a couple unexpected attacks.

I might have to play the quest again though because I made a couple small but probably significant play mistakes. I forgot for the first couple turns to count Stage 1B for Dagnir’s threat since it gets added to the victory display at the end of the first planning. I also was flipping the quest stages immediately instead of waiting until the beginning of the quest phase as instructed on the A side. I think I’ll play it again to see. I’m also curious to see if I just got lucky with The Upper Halls or if this one is just one of the shorter quests of the cycle.

Not a clean game as I miscounted Dagnir’s threat due to forgetting to add stage 1B for the few turns. Also I was generally flipping the new stage 2 right away as I didn’t see until later it is not supposed to be flipped until the start of the quest phase.
